The pH value is an important pillar in the pond environment. The value is partly determined by the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the water. An ideal pH value for the garden pond is between pH 7 and pH 8.
At this value the water contains sufficient CO2 and there will be an optimal growth of the water plants. Relatively high pH values (pH 8.5 and more) generally indicate CO2 deficiency in the pond water. Certainly when the carbonate hardness (KH value) is low.
